Revit Add-Ins & Plugins Worth Knowing Last reviewed: October 2023
- pyRevit – A powerful open-source extension that’s become a staple in my workflow. Steep learning curve, but once you get a handle on it, the customization options are endless, and it significantly speeds up repetitive tasks. Best of all, it’s free!
- DiRootsOne – This one is actually worth the money. It streamlines element replacements in Revit, making it a lifesaver when dealing with standard components. I’ve saved countless hours with this plugin, especially on projects with heavy MEP loads. Paid, but a solid investment.
- Ideate BIMLink – This tool is fantastic for exporting and importing data between Revit and Excel. Sometimes the syncing can be finicky, which is a minor annoyance, but its ability to handle mass edits directly from Excel is a game-changer. It’s not free, but definitely worth it for larger teams.
- eVolve Electrical – If you work in electrical design, you’ll find this tool invaluable. It’s especially strong in automating cable tray and conduit layouts. It has a hefty price tag, but the efficiency gains can justify the cost, especially on tight deadlines.
Coordination & Clash Detection Last reviewed: October 2023
- Navisworks – A staple for any project that requires solid clash detection. One tip: make sure to incorporate a routine for managing file versions. It can lead to headaches if multiple users are checking in and out files. The timeline feature is exceptionally useful for visualizing project flow.
- BIM 360/ACC – This is where collaboration really shines. I appreciate having everything in one platform, enabling easy access for team members across disciplines. Yet, it can feel overwhelming at first; focus on mastering the basics before diving deep into its many features.
- Solibri – If regulatory compliance is your concern, this tool is your best friend. Its ability to enforce design rules and create reports can save you from headaches down the line. The interface is user-friendly, but the licensing cost is on the higher side.
Automation & Scripting Resources Last reviewed: October 2023
- Dynamo Primer – If you are going to learn one thing, start with Dynamo. It’s intuitive and can drastically cut down your workload, especially for repetitive tasks. The Primer is an excellent starting point, providing hands-on projects to build your skills.
- Python for Revit (pyRevit/RevitPythonShell) – Python scripting is a powerful skill to add to your toolkit. The resources available online can be hit-or-miss, but Jeremy Tammik’s blog provides clarity and project-specific examples that help bridge that gap.
- Revit API Documentation – Definitely geared towards more advanced users, the API documentation can feel overwhelming. But diving into it will unlock incredible capabilities if you’re serious about customization. Just be prepared for some initial confusion.
AI Tools for Construction Professionals Last reviewed: October 2023
- Construction AI – This tool excels in predicting project risks and optimizing schedules. It’s not perfect, often requiring manual overrides, but its insights can drastically improve efficiency if used wisely.
- PlanRadar – Great for document management and task assignment through AI insights. It’s user-friendly, but sometimes lacks depth in advanced features which can leave larger teams wanting more. Still, its applicability in field operations is commendable.
- Ashley AI – This is a relatively new entrant focused on automating RFIs and submittals. While the premise is strong, its current capabilities may feel limited for larger firms. Keep an eye on it, but temper your expectations for now.
Project Management for MEP Contractors Last reviewed: October 2023
- Procore – A comprehensive project management solution that truly caters to contractors’ needs. The mobile app is a huge advantage for field teams. However, the learning curve can be steep; investing time in training is crucial to maximize its potential.
- Bluebeam – Especially useful for document management and markup capabilities. You can collaborate in real-time, which is a big win for remote teams. On the downside, pricing can get steep for larger teams, but worth it for how it streamlines communication.
- PlanGrid/ACC – It’s simple and intuitive, making it easy to adopt on-site. However, the lack of advanced features can limit its usefulness on more complex projects. If you want straightforward management without fuss, this is a solid pick, especially for smaller projects.
Communities & Learning Last reviewed: October 2023
- Autodesk University – A treasure trove of learning resources and networking opportunities. It’s worth attending virtually or in-person to keep up with industry trends and connect with other professionals.
- BILT – This conference focuses specifically on BIM and technology within construction. The workshops are hands-on and cater directly to practitioners. I’ve taken pointers that I implemented immediately upon returning to the office.
- YouTube Channels – “Revit Pure” and “The BIM Jedi” – Both are fantastic resources for visual learners; they break down complex concepts into manageable segments. As always, beware of misinformation, but these channels have worked wonders in my learning journey.
