From Knuckle-Dragging to BIM Nerd – My Journey in Construction

Hey there, I’m Michael Meyers, the guy behind Meyers Consulting Group LLC. My journey into the construction world started as a Journeyman electrician, where I learned the ropes on job sites, from digging trenches to wiring up commercial buildings. Those early days were nothing short of a learning experience; I was right in the thick of it, understanding what it really meant to be on a site with sparks flying and deadlines looming. After a few years, I stepped up to the role of site superintendent, where I juggled teams, schedules, and all the chaos that comes with managing a project. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to do more than supervise – I wanted to innovate.

Then came a pivotal moment when I stumbled upon Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Revit. I was working on an intricate project and spent a frustrating three hours manually updating panel schedules. At that moment, I thought to myself, “There has to be a better way.” Little did I know, diving into BIM would pivot my career into new territory. I became a BIM Specialist, soaking up everything I could about MEP coordination, digital workflows, and how to optimize efficiency in construction. I took to Revit like a fish to water and saw the potential it had to change how we work. This was the first step toward blending my field experience with technology.

As my fascination with BIM grew, I decided to tackle the “techy” side myself. I taught myself C# and Python by creating Revit add-ins to solve my own workflow problems – things like automating panel schedules and generating conduit clash reports. I went from a knuckle-dragging construction worker to someone who could write code, all while still understanding the gritty, real-world challenges faced on job sites. This was more than a career move for me; it was about crafting solutions that would elevate my trade and help others in the industry who might be drowning in paperwork or inefficient processes.

Now, I run my own consulting practice, where I help contractors embrace BIM, automate their Revit workflows, and integrate AI tools into their everyday tasks. I genuinely believe that technology shouldn’t just be reserved for those with degrees in computer science. Whether you’re a seasoned electrician or new to the trade, there’s a place for tech skills at your fingertips, and I can help you find it. My mission is to simplify the transition into modern practices for those who are used to the old-school ways. I love being that bridge between the field and the office, making it easier for guys like me to adopt these new technologies without feeling overwhelmed.
